GBA 2022 - Summer Update

coordinator Cosette Shipman on official plans, zoning, and land-use bylaws that will help inform our stakeholders on best building practices. We are also developing a planning and development guide to better equip members to respond to planning issues and development applications. And thirdly we are undertaking a septic systems education and inspection project where we’ve partnered with Georgian Bay Biosphere and Township of the Archipelago to promote sound septic system design and encourage adoption of best practice septic inspection programs. Governance. We rewrote our GBA bylaws to comply with the Ontario Not-for-profit Corporations Act (ONCA), and while this was a huge undertaking, it greatly benefits GBA and our member associations. Two-eyed seeing. As we work more with our Indigenous stakeholders, we are learning more about two-eyed seeing. Two-eyed seeing is learning to see from one eye with the strengths of Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing, and from the other eye with the strengths of western (and/or

scientific) knowledge and ways of knowing while learning to use both eyes together for the benefit of all. With so much going on, we can always use more hands on deck, so please consider raising yours to help. It might be on a subcommittee or volunteering a couple of hours on a one- off basis, but please think about putting your professional expertise to work for the betterment of the Bay. Last year I closed this report by saying that I was proud to be your president. I think with everything that we have accomplished this past year as a team I am even more proud and excited to lead the GBA. But, as I said last year, “…the power to make a difference starts with each of us making better choices and better decisions. It is our collective voice and actions as GBA members that will make the greatest difference to the Bay now, and of course, for our grandchildren’s grandchildren.” Miigwi’ch and thank you – wishing everyone a happy, safe, and fun-filled summer!
